Original Summary

I am a small business owner from Vienna. We run Postservice.at, a virtual business address service. Subscriptions, checkout via Chargebee, marketing mostly SEO plus some Google Ads. Payment via Stripe. I was sure our tracking worked or at least was setup correctly. Then (ofc) I had Claude go through GA4, Google Ads and Chargebee for April 14 to August 11, 2026 and reconcile them against each other, report by report, setting by setting. Without that (Claude) I would not have found any of this. Nobody clicks through every conversion setting and every checkout field by hand, and that is where the problems were. Some of it was embarrassing, some of it useful. Sharing in case it saves someone the same audit. 1. GA4 recorded only 43.9% of our real purchases We matched GA4 purchase events against paid subscriptions in Chargebee. More than half never showed up in GA4. Consent rejections, ad blockers and the jump to a hosted checkout domain all eat events. Lesson: use the billing system as ground truth and treat GA4 purchases as a sample. 2. GA4 splits AI assistant traffic across four channel groups ChatGPT sessions landed in "AI Assistant" (101), "Unassigned" as chatgpt.com / (not set) (37), "Referral" (15) and "Organic Search" (2). The default report showed 119 AI sessions instead of 177, and 1 purchase instead of 4. Fix: a custom channel group above Referral with a source regex like chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com 3. AI visitors had the highest purchase intent we measured 24.9% of AI sessions started a checkout, compared to 8.1% from Google organic and 6.9% from Google Ads. They arrive after the chat has already made the shortlist. Small volume, high intent. 4. Google Ads was optimizing for page views 1,460 of the 1,465 "conversions" in the account were GA4 page_view events imported as the primary conversion. Worth a look in your own account before you trust any CPA. 5. The gclid never reached our billing system We appended the gclid to the Chargebee checkout URL as a custom field. In 30 days, 0 of 887 hosted checkout pages carried it. The custom field had never been created in the Chargebee backend, and Chargebee drops unknown fields without an error. No code bug, a missing setting. If you have a hosted checkout, points 1 and 5 are worth checking this week. Happy to answer questions about the GA4 setup. submitted by /u/No-Meaning-9896 [link] [comments]
