Original Summary
If you run a referral program, where do you trigger the reward? That one decision seems to decide how much referral abuse you get. The options as I understand them: - On signup. Best numbers on the dashboard, and the easiest to farm: one person, a second email, a self-referral, done. - On email verification. Filters the laziest attempts, but a fresh Gmail takes a minutes - On the referred user's first payment. Kills most self-referrals since someone has to actually pay, but referrers wait weeks and a lot of them lose interest. - After the refund window. Safest option, and by then nobody remembers they referred anyone. Rewarding with credit or free months instead of cash seems to cut abuse too, since credit is only worth something if you keep using the product. Same with capping how many referrals one account can cash in. A few things I haven't figured out: If you reward on signup, how do you catch one person referring themselves from multiple accounts? Did moving the trigger later actually hurt legit referral, or did the numbers barely move? When you caught abuse, did you claw the rewards back or just close the loophole quietly? submitted by /u/SatisfactionAway3008 [link] [comments]
