Original Summary

We build an agent-based urban simulation for planning agencies. For years we described it with slides and screenshots, and people nodded politely. For the new site we tried something else: the homepage runs the same simulation engine, and visitors get five tiny tasks that take a few seconds each (place schools, draw a transit line, upzone a corridor, and so on) while the results compute as they go. At the end, everything they changed appears together in one district. The launch got far more engagement than anything we've posted before, which mostly taught us that people would rather move things than read about them. urbanly.org.
