Original Summary
I built an app that watches my Rubik's cube through my phone's camera and guides me through the solve one move at a time, using an animated 3D cube and spoken instructions. The app locates the stickers in two ways: through edge detection, and by searching for bright patches against the black plastic, which holds up even when the image is blurry. It then fits a 3x3 grid to the detected stickers and applies a perspective warp to flatten each face. Depending on the lighting, glare can make a colours look different to what they actually are. To handle this, I built the colour matching in the LAB colour space and weighted it so that hue always carries influence, even when a colour appears washed out. Once all six faces are scanned, the app assigns every sticker simultaneously, ensuring each colour appears exactly nine times. The app offers three solving methods: a beginner layer-by-layer approach, the intermediate 2-look OLL/PLL, and Kociemba's algorithm, which solves the cube in roughly 20 moves. submitted by /u/Willing-Arugula3238 [link] [comments]
