Hi everyone, I’ve been working on EverythingMac , an open-source file-search app for macOS, with a focus on fast searching, sorting, and browsing large file lists. First, a big thank-you to the developers of Cardinal . EverythingMac is derived from Cardinal and retains its Rust search engine. Their work provided the foundation that made this project possible, and they deserve a lot of credit. I also want to thank Everything for Windows for the inspiration. Its fast, straightforward approach to finding files is what I’m aiming for on macOS. The main improvements I’ve worked on in this fork are: Native macOS interface: SwiftUI and AppKit replace the Tauri frontend. Faster sorting across large result sets: reusable in-memory indexes for name, path, size, modified date, and created date. There’s no result-count limit on sorting. Background metadata indexing: file sizes and dates are indexed ahead of sorting. Smoother scrolling and live updates: reduced loading delays and fixed selection flicker as files change. More reliable keyboard actions: improvements to moving files to Trash with F8 and opening a terminal with F9 while the index is updating. Persistent sorting preferences: the selected sort column and direction survive restarting the app. Simpler search controls: an always-visible folder scope and a case-sensitivity toggle beside the search field. For a performance example, on my M4 Pro with a fully indexed 4.62-million-entry snapshot , the all-files query, indexed sort, and first 128 results took roughly 18–19 ms , excluding startup and UI rendering. That comparison is against an earlier version of this fork—not a benchmark against current upstream Cardinal or Everything on Windows. The approach also uses more idle memory to keep sorting fast.
