Original Summary
I started with a game experiment: let the player ask a character their own questions, with the language model running on the player's computer. That led to The Interview, a free Windows interrogation demo, and later to Offline AI NPC, a Unity toolkit whose version 1.0 launched on September 25. The current stack is Qwen3 for dialogue, Whisper for speech recognition and Piper for voice output. After initial model download and setup, conversations run locally. Developers provide character and scene context and connect the allowed action handlers to their game code. The practical trade-off is straightforward: no per-conversation cloud calls, but a larger first-run download and response times that vary with hardware and model settings. In the demo, players can type to skip speech recognition, and they make the final clear-or-detain decision themselves. You can try the English-language Windows demo without buying the tool: https://merrymaker14.itch.io/the-interview Project and documentation: https://merrymaker14.github.io/offline-ai-npc/ The toolkit is a paid Unity asset; I'm its developer: https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/tools/behavior-ai/offline-ai-npc-400726 For anyone building local AI products, I'm interested in how you explain the first-run model download and the hardware trade-offs without overwhelming someone who just wants to try the experience. submitted by /u/Comfortable-Cat-9611 [link] [comments]
