What it is: Shut is a free, open-source macOS menu bar app. As you close your MacBook lid, it plays one of 8 animations: a Duo-style fold, a sinkhole that drains into the notch, frost, a book crease, and more. It reads the real hinge angle, so the animation follows your hand. Close slowly and it plays slowly; open it and it runs backwards. Why I built it: I saw a few people post the iPhone Duo–style close animation for Macs and thought, why stop at one? It turned into a bit of a rabbit hole. The part that ended up being useful: Version 0.3.0 added Stay awake. Close the lid and your Mac keeps working. I kept leaving Claude Code running and coming back to a sleeping Mac, so now it stays awake while tools like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or Ollama are busy. It sleeps once they're done and won't drain your battery below a limit you set. When you open the lid, it shows how long it stayed awake and how much battery it used.
