Original Summary
Like most people trying to stay in deep work, I have a subconscious reflex of reaching for my phone every 10 minutes to check notifications, scroll, or just stare at the lockscreen. App blockers on my phone didn't work because I’d just bypass them or disable the limits when bored. So I decided to build something much more aggressive and humiliating: LookAway . How it works: Android App (Kotlin): Runs a lightweight background watcher service. The second my phone screen turns on/unlocks, it pings my PC over local Wi-Fi. PC Daemon (Go): A lightweight background process in my Windows system tray listens for the ping. The Penalty: My PC monitor instantly flashes blood red. Escalating Windows TTS voices start yelling through my desktop speakers/headphones: "Put the phone down" , "Look back at your screen" , repeating faster and getting more aggressive the longer the phone stays unlocked. The Relief: The moment I lock the phone, the audio stops immediately. Local Dashboard: It also hosts a clean, monochromatic local web dashboard showing real-time analytics — unlocks today, distraction frequency, and session history. Tech Stack: Backend / Desktop: Go (Systray, embedded assets, Windows TTS, local HTTP server) Mobile: Native Android (Kotlin, BroadcastReceivers, Foreground Service) Dashboard: Vanilla HTML/CSS/JS (embedded directly into the single Go binary) Privacy: 100% offline & local network only (no cloud, telemetry, or external servers). My phone screen time during work hours dropped by ~80% in the first two days because pavlovian conditioning actually works when your computer starts scolding you. Would love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or ideas for even worse penalties if I keep ignoring the warnings Github Link submitted by /u/Puzzleheaded-Task897 [link] [comments]
