Original Summary
hey guys, I've been grinding away in DaVinci Resolve for about two years now, mostly cutting talking head stuff for business and educational channels. I'm definitely still learning but I wanted to share a massive shift I've noticed recently. The crazy over-edited style with zooms every 0.5 seconds and non-stop motion graphics is kinda dead. Viewers are getting exhausted by it. I started focusing way more on pacing and psychology instead of flashy edits, and the retention stats for my clients actually shot up. Just wanted to drop some things that are working really well for me right now. For hooks, everyone knows the first 3 seconds matter, but a huge mistake is leaving dead air. I literally chop the clip so the very first frame has dialogue and movement. No breathing in, no walking up to the camera. Just straight to the point. I also completely stopped using those generic whoosh or riser sound effects at the very start. People subconsciously recognize it as a generic hook and immediately scroll away. Another big one is b-roll. I used to just slap pixels footage of random skyscrapers or a guy typing on a keyboard over boring business talk. It doesn't work anymore. If the creator is talking about a software, a client DM, or a revenue number, I take the time to put the actual screenshot on screen. To make it pop, I darken the whole screen except the exact metric I want them to look at. It forces their eyes right to the value. Audio is honestly half the battle. I usually keep vocals peaking around -6db and music super low at like -20db so it doesn't distract. But my absolute favorite trick lately is doing a reverb drop instead of fading out the music. If the topic changes, I add a reverb effect to the tail end of the audio clip and stretch the decay time. It leaves this echoing fade out that feels so much more cinematic than a basic volume fade. Lastly, just keeping it human. With all the AI generated crap right now, people want to know a real human is talking. I stopped cutting out every single breath or tiny stumble. If the creator genuinely laughs or pauses to think, I leave it in. It completely breaks up that dry corporate seminar vibe. Anyway, just a bit of a brain dump. I'm still testing new workflows every week, so if any creators here want to talk shop about visual pacing or need fresh eyes on a video you're working on, drop a comment. always down to connect! submitted by /u/PRXBOY [link] [comments]
