I have made a side project application which turns your Kindle or, basically, any e-reader with a basic browser into a distraction-free typewriter. All you need is an iOS device with a Bluetooth keyboard attached or a Mac. The idea here is not entirely new; there was already an application called SolarWriter which does the same thing. I’ve actually made inkScript (the current name of the app) because I didn’t enjoy the user experience I got with SolarWriter, but I had already bought a keyboard to use with it, so I wrote an app for the keyboard not to go to waste. I also liked the idea of looking at an eInk screen while you type well enough. Apparently, I’m not the only one who likes this idea; there are already numerous gadgets for writers that use eInk; some of them are quite expensive, like Freewrite typewriters, some are DIY and require lots of skill and hardware to set up. My app asks only for a keyboard, and if you install a Mac version, you don’t even need that. I also have plenty of features that make editing easier: you can touch the screen to move your cursor or select a portion of the text for copying and pasting; you can change the font and the font size; you can turn the ‘flow mode’ on, which encourages drafting without editing. There’s also a gimmick when you make an app give you typewriter sounds as you type. There’s also a fairly advanced iOS/Mac side of the app: you can search the texts, preview them, put them into folders, copy/move them, pin the drafts you’re currently working on, etc. Now that I’ve put quite a lot of time and effort into getting inkScript into the App Store, I see several choices before me: 1) Just stop caring about it. I myself know that this app is good, I use it all the time, and if few people want to try it, so be it. Not that it’s totally invisible so far; it had about 50 installs in the first month and even a couple of paid subscriptions. 2) Focus on getting more reviews from people who like to review eInk things. I’ve already got one fairly positive review, and I’m sure that’s where the majority of the 50 installs came from. 3) Find a few writers or bloggers willing to try it in their daily life. It would be too much to call inkScript life-changing, but I’m pretty sure if you bother to set it up, the quality and quantity of your output will change significantly. 4) Do some “real” marketing or at least make a few Instagram reels hyping the app. 5) Focus on getting this into Google Play Store. The actual app is already there, since I used Flutter to code this, but I understand that this is going to be much harder to do than the App Store.
