Original Summary
For anyone struggling with making their first $ from their SaaS... I highly recommend making your product COMPLETELY free for the first month or even longer. Don't even have a pricing page or hint at paid/pro features. Make literally everything free with no paywalls. There are 3 reasons why I recommend this: 1) A completely free product speaks to users 100x better than a "free tier". With a free tier, the user smells that you are trying to upsell them from the beginning. Completely free results in trust. 2) It is much much easier to introduce a paid tier to the loyal free users that have grown accustom to using your app. You're saying "hey I'm glad you've liked my product so much, here is a paid tier with extra cool stuff". The user is already warm to you. 3) It's so much easier to drive web traffic to a completely free site. And that web traffic will compound over time. For example, my app is completely free and I have had a lot of success recently with reddit posts linking to my app that are getting solid upvotes and comment engagement. These posts are indexed by google and will sit on the first page of Google forever. The high-performing posts are more likely to be indexed, and therefore provide more SEO juice. Obviously you need to weigh your operating costs. I'm running my free text-to-speech app, FreeReader for free, and it costs me a decent amount each month. But I now have over 1300 regular users who will be more likely to convert in the future if I choose to monetize. I've run this playbook a couple times in the past and the outcome has been worth the upfront investment. submitted by /u/parker_birdseye [link] [comments]
