I pulled my own comment history and counted, because I wanted to know if "just go comment where your users are" actually does anything. 100 comments, 21 days. 79 of them sat at exactly 1 point, which is the auto-upvote, so 79 out of 100 got no human reaction at all. Comment karma went from 25 to 41 in that window. Signups from all of it: zero. The interesting part is not the 79, it's the one that worked. Same voice, same length, same kind of answer. The only thing different about it was the thread: it had 2 comments on it when I replied. The other 8 that day went into threads with 6 to 40 comments and got nothing. So the readable signal before I write is not the sub, not the topic, not how good the answer is. It's how empty the thread is. In a busy thread I'm the 14th person saying a version of the same thing and nobody reads down that far. In an empty one I'm the only thing there. It cuts the other way for posts. My posts in small subs did 1 point and 0 comments, every time. The one in a big sub did 3 points and 12 comments, same formula. Posts want a big room, comments want an empty one. Still zero signups either way, so I'm not claiming this is acquisition. It's research that happens to be free. But I wasted 3 weeks optimizing the text when the variable was which thread I picked.
