Original Summary

I spent months researching the QR code tool space before building my own, and the category has some of the most aggressive lock-in tactics I've seen in SaaS. Here's what kept coming up: Free tier that's actually a 14-day trial. You generate a code, print it on 400 business cards for a networking event, and two weeks later the QR routes to a subscription prompt page. The code isn't free, it's a hostage. One person I talked to found out their codes were dead on a Tuesday afternoon when a colleague messaged them about an error page. Codes that die when you downgrade. Some platforms kill your redirect the moment you stop paying. You printed the materials, they're in circulation, and now the QR goes nowhere. The printed materials basically become a ransom note. $40/month for a URL redirect. The core feature people actually want is editable destination after printing. Most platforms gate that behind their highest tier. What you're paying for is a URL shortener, a QR generator, and an analytics dashboard. That's the whole product. No watermark treated as a premium feature. Removing a platform's logo from your own QR code costs extra. A clean code without someone else's branding is a basic expectation, not an upsell. CSV export gated behind business tiers. You can see scan analytics on a dashboard but can't pull the raw data unless you pay $50-100/month. Data about your own marketing campaigns is held behind a paywall. I'm building QRfox to push back on most of this (free tier with codes that keep working after cancellation, tops out at $16.99/mo), but the bigger lesson for me as a founder is about category norms. When an entire industry normalizes lock-in and overpricing, there's an opening for someone to come in with a fairer model. The real question is whether that alone is enough to compete against incumbents with 50,000 customers and G2 reviews.
