Original Summary
I built this app because I have so many songs on my Liked Songs list and it seems if I just try to listen to them in a random order I keep hearing the same ones over and over. I wish there was an option to just play the songs that I haven't heard for a long time but Spotify does not support this. I solved the problem by building the Resurface app. What the app does: you can start out by pressing the button for Full Refresh and this will just load a list of all of your Liked Songs and save that list in the cloud. Spotify does not track when you listen to these songs. At the beginning your Liked Songs list will show hundreds or even thousands of days since the last time you listened to it. To be honest I don't know where this number comes from other than it's the number that's supplied by Spotify. Now that you have downloaded your full list of songs and saved it on the cloud. You can press the button to create your Forgotten Playlist. Then you can press play on Resurface if you want but I don't ever bother with that. What I do is I go to Spotify and find my Resurface playlist (it shows a coded version of the date in the name). I put that playlist on shuffle and just play it. For some reason I get a kick out of playing the song that's oldest on that list. It's at the top of the list. Now one important part you can't forget is that you have to use the Sync button on Resurface probably at least once a day. Sync will request a list of the 50 most recent songs that you have listened to from Spotify and that's as far as they remember in your history. Spotify does report exactly when a specific song was listened to, but only for these most recent 50. Once the Sync is completed you'll see that the songs that were at the top of your Liked Songs list aren't there anymore. That's because now they're no longer the longest ones since you've listened to them. If you want to check this you can press the button called Flip Sort. You'll see the ones that you just listened to there. That's the only function of that button. It just gives you kind of a sanity check. There is one real point of friction for new users because Spotify does not let me just have a full Development Mode. They have a thing they call Extended Quota Mode but I do not qualify for that because I don't have 250,000 users. So the only way around this is to walk new users through the process of creating their own Spotify developer application. This takes about five minutes and when you're done with it you will be able to use my app and essentially we're telling Spotify that it's your app and you want to use it. submitted by /u/dougsparks38 [link] [comments]
