I got tired of paying monthly for AI wrappers, so I built my own desktop AI companion I kept running into the same thing with AI apps: $10/month here, $20/month there — and underneath it, you're often still paying for an API call. So I built Nib . It's a Windows desktop AI companion where you bring your own OpenRouter API key. No AI subscription from me, no markup on your usage. The idea is pretty simple: You own the API key You control your API costs Use different models through OpenRouter Desktop-first instead of another browser tab One-time purchase instead of another monthly AI subscription It's still early. Right now it's Windows-only and doesn't sync across devices. I'm deliberately keeping the first version small rather than pretending it's a fully-fledged AI agent. The bigger question I'm trying to answer is: Does BYOK actually make more sense for power users than another $20/month AI subscription?
