I have been doing manual outreach for my side project instead of paid ads, after Google Ads gave me zero customers for CA$108. Comments only, no links, no pitch. Three weeks in I pulled my own numbers, and one of them stopped me. Out of the last 100 comments, 79 sat at exactly 1 point. That 1 point is my own automatic upvote, so 79 out of 100 got no human reaction at all. Total comment karma went from 25 to 41. That is roughly 13 points per 100 comments. Then one day I left 9 comments in a batch. Eight of them sat at 1 point. One hit 5, and the OP replied "extremely helpful, thank you". I assumed the winner was the busiest thread. It was the opposite. The one that landed had 2 comments on it when I wrote. The other eight went into threads with 6 to 40 comments, where my answer was the tenth version of the same advice and nobody needed it. So the marker I can actually read before I write is not the subreddit, not the upvotes on the post, not how well I write it. It is how empty the thread is. The annoying part is that this is the exact opposite of what works for posts. My posts in small subreddits die at 1 point and 0 comments, every time. Same formula, same writing. The only posts that got real replies were in big subreddits. Posts want a crowded room, comments want an empty one, and I spent two weeks optimizing both in the wrong direction. What I still do not know: whether an empty thread is genuinely a better room, or whether I just get read there because I am the only one talking. n is 100 comments and one clean outlier, which is not much.
