Original Summary
I've been building BetaReward for a few months and I'm stuck on four design decisions. Would rather find out now than after more people use it. The constraint: Google requires 12 testers, opted in continuously for 14 days, before a personal developer account can apply for production access. Simple rule. But one person uninstalling on day 11 resets the entire clock. Here's what I decided, and where I'm still not confident: Recruit 15 instead of 12. The extra three are a buffer against dropouts, not padding. But I don't know if three is the right number. Too few and one dropout still kills the run; too many and I'm funding testers who were never needed. Is there a defensible way to size this, or is it just vibes? Add a 2-day buffer past the 14 days — 16 total. The theory is that Google counts "still opted in" continuously, so you want slack on the tail. But I've never seen this documented anywhere and I half-suspect it's cargo cult. If you've been through production access, did the buffer ever actually matter? Force the Google Group to "anyone can join." This is the one I'm confident about. Set it to "ask to join" and testers hit a wall and silently vanish — you find out days later when you check your count. Worth checking yours regardless of whether you'd ever use something like this. Charge per completed campaign, not per tester. Dropouts come out of my margin instead of the developer's. Better for the buyer, real cost for me, and I'm not sure it's the right long-term incentive. The thing that drove most of these: "opted in" and "installed" are not the same state, and Google counts the former. A tester who uninstalls on day 9 still counts as gone. If you want to poke at it: https://betareward.site What I'd actually like feedback on: Is 15 + 2 days the right shape, or am I over-engineering around a rare failure? How would you screen task-paid testers so they don't just install and ghost? Is charging per campaign rather than per tester the right call, or does it just hide the real cost from the buyer? submitted by /u/seekworld [link] [comments]
