Original Summary
I've always liked the flowchart-style guides some people put together for getting into a band's catalog or an author's backlist, branching depending on what you're looking for instead of just working straight down a ranked list. Problem was, I'd usually get a few branches in, lose the thread, and drop it. And for a lot of the stuff I wanted to get into, that kind of guide just didn't exist. I like to be pretty 'complete' about how I explore something, and googling a theme to find related works didn't really feel efficient. Tracker apps like Letterboxd or Goodreads are good for logging what you've done and they'll suggest what to try next, but that's not the same as a structured path. "Here's something you might like" feels more like an entertainment option, and you focus on one genre (movie suggestion for movies, book after book, and so on). For example, if you want to get into French New Wave, you don't just watch the movies, you have to read some film history and theory as well. So I built Syllbi. It's a free iOS app, no ads, no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, nothing to buy really (except the works you see, but I didn't put affiliate links so it's on you). Flowchart-style guides or curated lists for getting into an artist, franchise, or genre across books, film, TV, music, games, and comics, plus a way to track what you're working through and build your own guide if the one you want doesn't exist yet. This is my first app, and the amount of bureaucracy around shipping it was more than I expected going in. Took around two months. Forms, domain registration, manual entries into systems I'd never dealt with before, a lot of waiting around on approvals. App Store review alone took 6 days. It felt overwhelming more than once, honestly. I also don't have anything close to a proper setup for this. It's a side project and I didn't want to spend money I didn't need to. Builds happened on a 2013 Mac Pro running Sequoia (main PC is 2021 Asus TUF with 8GB of RAM) through an OpenCore legacy patch. Xcode builds took about an hour each. Hope everything works. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/syllbi/id6804296668 Feedback welcome. submitted by /u/heybeybibeybi [link] [comments]
