I used to send myself messages whenever I needed to remember something. Eventually the conversation became a pile of unrelated notes, links, and things I had already forgotten why I saved. So I tried dedicated notes apps. They were better at organizing the information. Somehow, I still kept going back to the chat app. That bothered me for a while. I knew the chat history was going to be annoying to search later. I was choosing the messier option anyway. I think the explanation is less about organization than I wanted to admit: when I have a thought to save, I care about getting it out of my head. Deciding where it belongs is another task. Even a small amount of that is sometimes enough to make me use the thing I already know. Reading the note later has a similar problem. Sometimes I don't want to open an app and spend time in it. I just need to check one line and get back to what I was doing. When I started working on my own desktop notes app, this became more useful to me than comparing feature lists. I could add lots of things the chat app didn't have and still lose to it at the moment someone wanted to write something down. So I started caring about apparently trivial steps. Does reading this need a click? Does the user have to open a larger window? Am I making them choose something that could have been left alone? That eventually led me to spend a fairly unreasonable amount of time on a hover preview. Not because hovering is inherently better than clicking, but because checking a note shouldn't always require fully opening it. There is an obvious limit to my solution: a desktop app doesn't solve the cross-device convenience of messaging yourself. I haven't solved built-in multi-device sync. This is about making the desktop part less awkward, not pretending every reason to use chat has disappeared. I still like the idea that someone could use a notes app very casually. One note in a corner, occasionally updated, without ever graduating to a system.
