Original Summary
I’m a solo developer working on an iOS app, and I’ve recently hit the part of app development that I think a lot of us probably dread: marketing. Building the app has honestly been the easy/fun part for me. I can spend hours working on features, UI, fixing bugs, etc. But actually getting people to find out that the app exists has been a completely different challenge. I’ve set up a waitlist while I’m still developing, but I’ve been struggling to get meaningful traffic to the site and get people onto the waitlist. So I’m curious to hear from people here who have actually managed to get their apps in front of people: What marketing channels have you used that actually brought users? Reddit? TikTok? Instagram? YouTube? Product Hunt? SEO? Paid ads? Something completely different? How much marketing did you do before launch ? Did you start marketing while the app was still being developed, or wait until you had something ready? Did you build up a waitlist beforehand, and if so, was it actually useful? How much time did you realistically spend on marketing compared to development? Were there any things you tried that turned out to be a complete waste of time? And for those of you who eventually got traction, what do you wish you had started doing earlier? I’m especially interested in hearing from people who started as solo/indie developers rather than companies with an actual marketing team behind them. It seems like this is the “dark side” of being a solo developer that you don’t really appreciate until you get there . You can build something you genuinely think is cool, but if nobody knows it exists, it doesn’t really matter. Would love to hear what has actually worked for you guys. I’m much more interested in real experiences and lessons learned than generic “post on social media” advice. submitted by /u/Jogventure [link] [comments]
