Hi all, I’m excited to share Shorthand ( https://shorthand.ing ), a side project that I've been building. Shorthand takes live meeting notes in Obsidian (for now, Google Docs next) without a meeting bot and uses your existing AI subscription. It's free and open source (MIT license). You can use Shorthand for both meeting note taking and as a personal note taker that organizes your thoughts. I looked at paid and open source AI note taking apps, but I had trouble finding one that both: Didn't require me to buy another subscription for note taking or use metered API usage Gave me a choice of where the notes get taken (e.g. Obsidian, Google Docs, Notion) What it does Uses a desktop app to listen to the mic and system audio and runs speech-to-text locally An Obsidian plugin writes organized notes (actions, lists, tables, highlights) AI note taking uses Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor CLI and usage from a ChatGPT, Claude, or Cursor subscription When using Shorthand's meeting note taking, by default it does not save a recording or transcript and the agent's AI session is deleted when you finish. How I built it Shorthand is a fork of Handy ( https://github.com/cjpais/Handy ) and builds on the great work CJ Pais. Handy provides a solid speech to text foundation, but doesn't capture system audio. I added system audio plus a note taking backend that is used by the Obsidian plugin. I used Claude Code and Codex to collaboratively build the app , the shared note taking core , and the Obsidian plugin (all MIT licensed). Status Windows is solid for me. Mac is confirmed working by a few testers. Linux builds exist and need testers. All builds are currently unsigned. Obsidian today; Google Docs next.
