Original Summary

I printed 400 business cards for a networking event and the QR code on the back died two weeks later. A colleague messaged me: it was routing to an error page with a subscription prompt. The 14-day trial had expired while the cards were still in circulation. That is the moment you realize the codes are hostages and the printed materials are the ransom note. So I started building. The core question was simple: what does a dynamic QR code platform actually need to do? Redirect a URL. Let you change that URL after printing. Tell you how many people scanned. Everything else, the enterprise feature sets, the 204 million scan capacity, the G2 badges, that is for a different customer. The hard part was not the tech. A dynamic QR code is fundamentally a URL shortener with a QR generator and an analytics dashboard. The hard part was pricing. Every competitor I looked at gates "editable destination after printing" behind their highest tier. Most advertise a free tier but the limits make it unusable for anything real: watermarked codes, 14-day analytics, no CSV export. The free tier is a trial in disguise. A few decisions I made and what I learned: Free tier gets 5 codes, 500 scans, all QR types, full design customizer. The only catch is a small "Made with QRfox" watermark. No credit card required. I figured if the free tier is genuinely useful, people will trust the paid tiers. Codes keep redirecting even if you downgrade or cancel. If your trial ends on a competitor, your printed codes die. That felt like a dark pattern I did not want to copy. Pricing tops out at $16.99/mo for unlimited codes, scans, team seats, and API access. The incumbents charge $39.99 for the same feature set. What I got wrong: I assumed the free tier would drive organic conversion, but the upgrade triggers are still unclear. People sign up, generate a code, and disappear. I do not know yet what actually pushes someone from free to paid. Still working on that. What worked: saying "no credit card required" explicitly. It costs nothing to put on the page but it directly addresses the trust gap in this category. People have been burned by trial traps, and stating it plainly matters more than I expected. I'm building QRfox ( https://qrfox.io ). Still early, no impressive numbers to share yet, but the codes do not die when you stop paying and that felt worth building. submitted by /u/Natebald603 [link] [comments]
