Original Summary
Hey r/SideProject ! Like many of you here, I spend 10+ hours a day at my desk staring at code and docs. Over the past year, my screen anxiety and ADHD fidgeting got pretty bad. I tried conventional Pomodoro apps, but the harsh buzzer alarms and stiff rectangular timers only added more tension. I wanted something tactile and calming that lives quietly on the side of my screen—like a virtual silicone fidget toy. How it was built (under the hood): Raw WebGL Mesh & Shaders: Instead of pulling in heavy 3D bundles like Three.js, I hand-rolled a lightweight WebGL renderer with custom Blinn-Phong silicone specular shaders. Verlet Mass-Spring Integration: The squishy jelly deformation is calculated via a discrete mass-spring lattice. When you drag, poke, or pull, the deformation propagates across the silicone mesh with realistic damping and inertia. Procedural Web Audio: Instead of jarring MP3 sound files, all popping, stretching, and chime sounds are synthesized in real-time with Web Audio oscillators and bandpass filters. Calm Focus Rhythms: A gentle 25-minute breathing rhythm where the companion quietly sleeps while you focus, and wakes up when it's time for a break. The whole thing is 100% client-side, offline-ready, and lightweight. I'd love to hear your feedback on the physics feel and damping rebound! What kind of tactile desktop companions or focus tools do you use during deep work? submitted by /u/Brief-Network-81 [link] [comments]
