Original Summary
https://reddit.com/link/1wigun9/video/q2mgxnfwmzph1/player I’ve been working on a desktop tool for AI-assisted paper reading, and one product decision has been bothering me more than I expected: Should AI reading tools really be centered around a chat window? When I started using AI for papers, my workflow was usually: PDF → copy a paragraph → ask ChatGPT → go back to the PDF → find the original context → repeat. chat is convenient, but after a while I noticed that it gradually becomes disconnected from the paper itself. it changed how we approached the tool we’re building. instead of treating the PDF as an attachment to a chatbot, we’ve been experimenting with keeping the paper as the primary object , with AI explanations, analysis, translation, and evidence attached around it. one thing I’ve found particularly interesting is that adding more AI capabilities doesn’t necessarily improve the experience. Sometimes the more autonomous the AI becomes, the easier it is for the user to stop actually reading the paper. So lately I’ve been thinking about the distinction between: AI that helps you understand something vs. AI that understands it for you. for research/learning products, I’m starting to think that distinction matters a lot. for people building AI SaaS or productivity tools: how do you decide when AI should automate a workflow, and when it should deliberately keep the user in the loop? submitted by /u/Away-Lingonberry-560 [link] [comments]
