Hey guys! I want to share a solo hobby project I've been working on called Satomi . She's an ambient, browser-based virtual life simulator where you don't directly control her at all. Satomi is a college student who governs herself. She goes to class, works part-time, manages her own money, reads books, listens to music, goes out, stays home, and generally just lives her life in the background. So why did I build this? My very first inspiration was actually a GPS navigator (yup!). When I drive somewhere, I often turn the GPS on even when I already know the route. I don't really need it; I just like having that little voice accompanying me, especially on a long trip. That made me wonder if I could make something similar for people who study, work, or maybe code at their desks: a digital companion that doesn't constantly demand your attention, but simply "exists" alongside you. And that's basically how Satomi came to be. Satomi is not powered by an online LLM or using any generative AI chatbot. Her behavior runs locally and offline , using a behavioral simulation built around probability, personality, needs, routines, location, weather, recent experiences, and many other factors. Her personality, which is randomized when you first start or reset her, can also slowly change based on the life she actually lives. Things that happen to her can leave behind small "emotional residues" that influence what she does later. She might procrastinate something she's been avoiding, hesitate after spending too much, or decide to stay home and rest when she's not feeling well. Since there's no real way to have a conventional conversation with her or take control of her, I've built in a few ways to interact with her indirectly. You can use a 25-minute Pomodoro timer (she'll comment on it when she happens to be around), listen to your own local music together (yes, she'll actually "listen" and comment on it too), or recommend "books" for her to read and review at her own pace.
