Original Summary
If I had to start from zero tomorrow and get my first 10 clients, I wouldn't run ads. I'd spend a few days doing two things: Get painfully specific about who I want to sell to. Find people who are already complaining about the problem I solve. Here's exactly how I'd do it. Get very specific about your ICP Don't write down "startups" or "SaaS companies." That's not enough. Write down: What type of company? How big are they? What stage are they at? Who is the person you need to speak to? What specific problem are they dealing with? For example, instead of: "We help SaaS companies with customer support." I'd go with: "We help B2B SaaS companies with 5–20 employees where the founder is still handling support and is getting overwhelmed by tickets." Now I can actually find these companies. Same thing with an ads agency. Instead of: "We help ecommerce brands grow." Try: "We help Shopify brands doing $20k–$100k/month that are already running Meta ads but can't get their CAC down." That's the level of specific I'm talking about. Then find 50–100 companies that fit that description. You don't need thousands of leads to get your first few customers. Go find people who are already talking about the problem This is probably my favourite way to find prospects. First, look at your competitors. Check their LinkedIn and X posts, Reddit mentions, reviews, Product Hunt comments, etc. Look for people complaining about the product, asking for features, looking for alternatives or saying something isn't working. Those people are worth looking at. Then do the same thing on X and Reddit. Search for the problem, not your product. If you're solving customer support problems, search things like: "customer support is killing me" "how do I handle support tickets" "looking for a customer support tool" "support team is too expensive" Save the people who clearly fit your ICP. Then reach out. You don't need some crazy sales script either. Just show that you actually saw what they were talking about and explain why you're reaching out. They've already told you they have the problem. You're just starting a conversation. Bonus: If it's not working, look at your volume One thing I've noticed is that people sometimes change their ICP, offer, messaging and entire business after sending 30 outbound messages and getting nothing. 30 is nothing. There are too many things that can go wrong with one individual outreach attempt. They might not see it. They might be busy. They might not need it right now. Your message might be slightly off. You need enough attempts to know whether the system isn't working or whether you simply haven't done enough. Think of it like a numbers game. If you contact 10 people and nobody responds, you don't really know much. If you contact 100, you start seeing patterns.
