Original Summary
I bought wired USB-C EarPods and wanted to dictate AI prompts using the button on the cable. Then I realized the two volume buttons could help with editing, too. That became EarPods AI Keys, a small native macOS menu-bar app. The defaults are: • Center: macOS Dictation. • Minus: Backspace. • Plus: Enter. For AI workflows, the useful part is being able to talk through an idea, correct a character from the remote and keep going. Enter retains the focused app’s normal behavior, so it may insert a newline, send a message or execute a terminal command. The most surprising issue appeared when I moved the setup to a second Mac: the center button opened Siri. Turning Siri off made Dictation work. Siri needs to stay off for the setup I’ve tested; the app doesn’t change that preference itself. You can change the button assignments, record shortcuts such as Command-Z, switch the remapping off, enable launch at login and uninstall from the menu. Reconnection uses device notifications rather than periodic polling. It’s free and open source under MIT. I tested build 3’s basic input on two Macs running macOS 27.0.1, including reconnect and reboot scenarios on the second Mac. The current download is an Apple silicon preview, ad-hoc signed and not notarized. The public package was re-signed after removing private build paths; its runtime sections match the tested build. The README explains first-launch approval and permissions for custom shortcuts. Speech recognition comes from macOS, so this doesn’t require an AI API key or subscription. It also doesn’t guarantee offline transcription.
