Original Summary
Six years ago, I walked into a gym knowing next to nothing about strength training. I’d gained a lot of weight during COVID, wasn’t happy with myself, and decided it was time to do something about it. I started working with a personal trainer who gave me new plans every six to eight weeks. I learned the exercises and gradually got stronger. But something always bothered me. How was I supposed to know when to add weight? When to add another rep? When to hold back? Sometimes I’d just throw another plate on the bar because I thought I should be progressing. My form would go to shit, but hey, I was lifting heavier, right? Fast forward to July 2026. I’m sitting on a leg press machine between sets, wondering whether I could use math to take some of the guesswork out of lifting. Could I build something that looked at my reps, effort, and performance and helped decide what to do next? Could it recognize when I was stalling? So I started experimenting. I built a rough little app for my Garmin Epix Gen 2. Originally, it was just for me. The website collected my workout data, and that was about it. But it worked. I was adding reps, increasing weight when I’d earned it, and getting better at knowing when to hold steady. Some friends encouraged me to put it on Garmin’s Connect IQ store. So I did. And then people started using it. That was probably the biggest surprise of this whole journey. I’m now talking to lifters from around the world, hearing about their goals, celebrating their PBs, and learning things about strength training I never imagined I’d be studying. I’m also lifting heavier than I did when I was younger. The funny thing is, even after six years, I still feel like a beginner sometimes. There’s so much I don’t know. And that’s become my motivation for continuing to build Reckoner. I want someone walking into a gym for the first time to have a little more confidence than I did. To know where to start, how to progress, and what to do next. Because when you’re a beginner, 95% of the battle is just walking through that door. I didn’t build this because I’m a strength training expert. I built it because I remember what it’s like to be a beginner. For those of you who build things, did your project start with a personal frustration, or did you always have a business in mind? submitted by /u/jpcams [link] [comments]
