Original Summary
For every game, I'd sit down with a note pad and try to work out who sits which inning, who sat last game, who hasn't played infield in weeks, and whether my pitcher is even allowed to throw. Took me more time than I'd like and somebody still ended up sitting too long. So I started building UnBenched in June. It went live on the App Store last week. Android's coming soon. What it does: you enter your roster once, rate each kid at the positions they can play, and set your league's rules. Before a game you mark who's missing and it builds the whole field lineup, every inning. Fair bench rotation, pitcher rest from pitch counts, and it carries fairness across the season, so a kid who sat a lot last week plays more this week. Tap any inning and it tells you why each kid is where they are. That part is mostly for parents. The fun part was the solver. I started out thinking I'd drop in a real constraint solver (OR-Tools, CP-SAT). Ended up with plain simulated normalization in TypeScript instead: Greedy pass to get something roughly valid, then about 8,000 random swaps, with a 1.5 second cap Hard rules carry a huge penalty, everything else is a weighted soft penalty Seeded RNG so the same roster gives you the same lineup. Coaches hate when it changes on them Turns out optimal doesn't matter much here. "Fair" is subjective, so it's really a pile of soft constraints. And when a coach says the rotation feels off, I bump one weight. No solver rewrite. When a lineup breaks a rule, it suggests one or two swaps that fix it, instead of re-solving everything. If you pinned your pitcher, you don't want the whole infield shuffled to fix right field. Stack is Expo / React Native and TypeScript. No backend at all. Everything lives on the phone, no account, works offline. Half our fields have no signal, so that wasn't optional. Money: free with banner ads, plus a one-time $4.99 Pro (no ads, the fix suggestions, season trends). No subscription. For a rec coach's app that felt like the honest option. Would love feedback on any of it. The store page, the pricing, the idea itself. And if you coach youth sports I really want to hear what rules your league has that I haven't covered. https://unbenched.app App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/unbenched-sports-lineups/id6805171850 submitted by /u/Opposite_Analysis_24 [link] [comments]
