Original Summary
Hey r/SideProject , I'm Philipp, a surfer from the north of Germany and the dev behind BreakFinder. It started with my own Garmin: the built-in surf mode counted waves while I was paddling or just sitting in the lineup. So I wrote my own wave detection, first for Garmin, and then it kind of got out of hand :D Today the watch app runs on Garmin, Apple Watch, Wear OS, Amazfit and Huawei watches (Suunto is coming soon). It detects your waves during the session and syncs them to the phone app and the website, where you see every ride of the session. Around that there is a surf forecast for spots worldwide and a session log. The best part of building it: two weeks on Fuerteventura this autumn with three watches on my wrist at the same time. Every evening I went through the tracks, found what broke (paddling that looked like a wave, a wet screen splitting a session in two, GPS dropping out underwater), fixed it, and went back out the next morning to check. Building for five watch platforms as one person is the hardest part. Every platform has its own SDK, store review and quirks, and some reviews take ages. It's freemium and free to download: https://breakfinder.surf I'd love feedback, especially: - If you surf with a watch, which one, and what annoys you about tracking? - Anyone else here shipping to several watch platforms? How do you keep the code from drifting apart? Thanks for reading! :) submitted by /u/Ok-Fruit823 [link] [comments]
