Original Summary
Many disputes in subscription businesses are not fraud at all. They come from customers who forgot they signed up, didn't recognise the charge on their statement, or couldn't find the cancel button and found it easier to call their bank. How each outcome counts is less intuitive than it looks. A refund issued before the customer disputes is not a dispute, so it never touches your ratio. A dispute you fight and win still counts, because Visa and Mastercard monitoring count it the moment it's filed. A dispute the customer later withdraws still counts too. And on Stripe, once a dispute is open you can no longer refund the charge, only accept it or respond. So the ratio gets fixed before the bank is involved. Send a reminder before each renewal and keep the timestamped email. Make cancelling easier than calling the bank. Set your statement descriptor to the product name customers actually know, since a lot of "I don't recognise this" disputes are just an unfamiliar descriptor. Refund quickly when someone asks. When a dispute does come in, let the dispute-created webhook cancel the account and add the card fingerprint, email and IP to a block list. A card that has disputed you once is the strongest signal you have for the next one. If you fight a cancelled-subscription dispute (Visa 13.2), the evidence that tends to carry it is the terms and cancellation policy accepted at signup, the renewal reminder with its timestamp, and logins or usage after the charge. (We work on chargebacks, so weigh that accordingly.) submitted by /u/Justt_ai [link] [comments]
