Original Summary
I'm an aerospace engineer. Exergy (second-law) analysis tells you WHERE a jet engine destroys useful work, not just how much — but the tools for it were enterprise licenses or 40-year-old Fortran decks. So I built my own and put it on the web: exergyjet.com What it does: you configure a turbojet or turbofan cycle (compressor ratio, turbine inlet temp, afterburner, flight condition) and get station-by-station T/P/h/ṁ/V on a live interactive station diagram (homepage, no signup needed), exergy destruction per component via Gouy–Stodola, η_II, a Sankey of the fuel exergy budget, and a PDF report. The fun engineering problems I had to solve in the solver: Afterburners aren't a magic temperature knob. The augmentor is a constant-area duct, so heat addition costs total pressure along a Rayleigh line — and enough heat thermally chokes the duct (M=1 at the exit). The solver caps T_AB there and tells you. Convergent-divergent nozzles punish you on the ground. Give the solver a fixed A9/A8 and at sea level the exit runs overexpanded (P9 < ambient, negative pressure thrust) — exactly what the textbooks say. Size it for cruise NPR and it pays off. Turbine cooling air isn't a fudge factor. NGV air skips combustion and rejoins at the rotor inlet (does work); rotor air skips the rotor too (doesn't). The mixing energy balance sets the rotor inlet temperature — for a 1450 K TIT with 5% NGV air that's a 40 K drop, not the 10 K placeholder people usually hard-code. Validation: regression-tested against published engine test data (J85-class) and sanity-banded against a reference turbojet cycle (32 kg/s, OPR 12, 1450 K): dry thrust within a few % of the class value, TSFC 0.895 kg/daN/h, and the combustor eats ~half the exergy destruction like the literature says. Stack: React + TypeScript solver (NASA cp polynomials), Supabase auth, Paddle for payments (MoR handles global VAT), Cloudflare Pages hosting, and a Telegram bot that pings me on sales/support. Free tier runs the full turbojet workflow, no credit card. Turbofan + afterburner + comparison mode is Pro. Would genuinely love feedback from anyone who's built in a hyper-niche technical market — my entire TAM is maybe 50k engineers worldwide. submitted by /u/Round_Strike_1930 [link] [comments]
