Hey everyone! 👋 I'm an independent developer and I've been experimenting with pushing the boundaries of what we can transmit over sub-GHz LoRa on Meshtastic without touching the node firmware. Today, I’m excited to share an early experimental alpha research fork of Meshtastic-Android that brings ultra-low-bitrate 24kHz neural voice notes and tactical half-duplex Live PTT to our mesh network! ⚡ The Best Part: Zero Firmware Flashing • Runs over 100% Stock Meshtastic Firmware (ESP32, nRF52, RP2040, etc.). • Transmits over standard PortNum.PRIVATE_APP (port 256). • Nodes without this app simply relay the packets transparently across the mesh as normal encrypted traffic. 🎙️ How Does It Work? 24kHz Neural Speech Tokenization (WavTokenizer): Speech is compressed offline on-device into 75 discrete quantizer tokens/second (~900 bps / 112.5 bytes/s). A 5-second voice note is packed into ~562 bytes (fitting neatly into 3 LoRa packets). Ultra-Narrowband Fallback: Includes native Codec 2 (700C / 1400 bps) for low-spec devices or ultra-long range. 3-Byte Micro-Framing & Selective ARQ: Custom header maximizing payload up to 205 bytes per LoRa chunk, with a 3-byte Selective NACK protocol requesting only dropped packets.
