Original Summary

I've been a developer for about 15 years, and I got tired of the same routine every time I wanted to work on something: open a file manager, dig through folders, open a terminal, cd somewhere, try to remember whether this one uses npm run dev or pnpm start … The goal was to create a launcher-like experience that was more than just apps or folder locations, but something that was actually aware of what developers use and do everyday. So I built dev-prompt . Press a hotkey from anywhere, type a few letters of a repo's name, and you get a menu of what that project can actually do: Its own scripts. It reads the project: package.json scripts run through whichever package manager it uses, plus cargo , go , Python, .NET, Docker Compose, and separate menus for sub-projects in a monorepo. Your tools. Open the path in your terminal, file manager, VS Code, Zed, JetBrains IDEs or AI CLIs like Claude Code. It attempts to auto-detect common developer software and anything you don't have installed just doesn't show up, keeping the list clutter free, and giving you quick access to the tools you love to code with. A shell right in the overlay. CTRL+R opens directly to the default shell inline in the app (pwsh, bash, zsh, fish…) in the repo's working directory. Hide the overlay and it keeps running, so a dev server stays up, navigate back to run more commands or close out the shell session all together. Or, if you prefer the standalone terminal, CTRL+T will open a new terminal in that working directory. Repo housekeeping. Create a new repo with Git (or Jujutsu, Mercurial…) set up, or move an old one to the Trash. Before deleting, it checks for uncommitted work and unpushed commits and warns you. If you want it back, there's an Undo. Your apps too. Type > and it searches your installed applications instead. It's free and open source (MIT), built with Tauri, Rust and Svelte. It runs on Windows and Linux , with signed packages for apt, dnf, pacman and Flatpak, and it updates itself on Windows. Adding support for most tools is a few lines of YAML even by users, so support from the app isn't always required: you can add extra tool detection for stuff you use without waiting for a pull request. It's a highly customizable and open engine. submitted by /u/seraphx2 [link] [comments]
