Original Summary

Quick recap: everyone around me is building productivity tools, so I built the least productive Mac app I could think of. It makes it snow on your desktop, and the snow actually piles up on top of your windows, your icons and the Dock. Drag a window and the snow slides off. Close it and it all comes down. Leave it alone long enough and icicles grow under it. Every now and then a snowman builds himself on the Dock, waves at you, and eventually melts. How day 1 went Reddit’s spam filter ate my first posts (fair, I got excited and posted in a few places at once) About 500 people visited the site anyway 6 of them paid $2.99 for snow on their Mac. After fees that’s around $12, so I’m not quitting my job yet What I shipped today You can knock the snowman down. Click one of his snowballs and it bursts. Hit the bottom one and he drops a level. Hit the middle one and his head tumbles into the snow. He fights back. Every minute or two he scoops up a snowball and throws it at one of your windows, an icon or the Dock. It splats, slides down the glass and melts. (There’s a switch to turn it off, for people with real work to do.) The fun parts to build The app is one big transparent layer that lets every click through to your apps. To make the snowman clickable without breaking that, it only starts catching clicks while your pointer is over him, and goes back to click-through the moment you move away. He only aims at spots you can actually see: before throwing, it checks that no other window covers the target, so he never hits something hidden behind another app. A splat sticks to the window it hit. Drag the window and the splat comes along; shake it and it falls off. It’s native Swift and RealityKit, about half a millisecond of work per frame, and it goes to sleep when nothing is moving. The video is a real screen recording of my Mac. I only added the zooms and the sound. Day 3: what should he do next? Snow angels when you scribble with the cursor? Sledging down the edge of a window? Or should you be able to throw snowballs back at him? Happy to drop the link in the comments if anyone wants to try it. submitted by /u/MuchAge1486 [link] [comments]
