I have found in the past year that I get really frustrated trying to stay current with the news. The main reason being as I scroll the google news widget on my phone i'm usually hit with either clickbait titles, random posts from X that aren't news, or "nothing sandwiches" where the clickbait title makes you go to a site and the site that doesn't even have anymore information on the story. How I fixed this: I built an Android and iOS app called Distill News that pulls news stories from reputable news sites a few times a day using their RSS feeds, then I run a classifier which throws out any stories that don't have enough information beyond the title "nothing sandwiches". After that I have an AI read the articles and give a real summary of what the article covers along with a replacement title that better represents the article. Clicking an article still links you directly to the news site who wrote the piece as well. Initial feedback : Gave the app to friends and family and most of the feedback was positive! Lots of feature requests like search, genre subscribing, a "good news" filter, local news, no algorithm everything in chronological order, browse as guest, etc which have all been implemented now. One negative feedback is without clickbait and in a world where everyone is primed for sensational titles to spark emotional responses, reading the actual news feels less interesting. The best way I can think to combat this is to allow users to really customize their feeds to exactly the articles they care to read so that you don't get bored of your news feed but still don't need clickbait to encourage reading. I would love to get more feedback on this especially around other ways to mitigate the "boringness" of a non-clickbait news feed. This app really is a side project, its free with no ads and cost me about $2 a month to run indefinitely so I really just want to improve it enough that other people can benefit from using it as well.
