Original Summary
Hi r/SideProject , I've been running my own media server for a while, and at some point I was spending more evenings maintaining it than actually using it. So I started building my own dashboard next to my day job. That turned into CloudZH. I tested it on everything from small test machines to full-size server hardware, and it now runs my main homelab. What it does: Installs 40+ self-hosted apps (Plex, Jellyfin, Immich, Sonarr, Radarr and more) in one click and wires them to each other automatically System Health checks disks, updates, certificates, backups and network, and fixes the safe problems on its own Friends and family get their own logins with limited rights: they can use the library, but can't touch the config Encrypted backups (second disk, NAS, S3 or cloud storage) and updates that roll back automatically if something breaks Passkeys, 2FA, WireGuard VPN and a firewall with bans built in Setup from the terminal or completely in the browser Stack, for the curious: Ubuntu Server 24.04 or Debian, every app in Docker A small hardened Python agent does the system work over a Unix socket The dashboard is a dependency-free Node app, running unprivileged in a read-only container behind Caddy CLI is zh , the UI is available in 6 languages What was harder than expected: Getting apps to configure each other reliably (Prowlarr refused the download client because a category didn't exist yet) Making a fresh install come up with zero warnings, no matter which hardware it lands on Updates that can safely roll themselves back Full disclosure: I'm the developer, and it's a paid product. There's a live demo in your browser with simulated data, no signup needed: https://cloudzh.app/demo I built it with some help from Claude (AI), and every release gets tested on my own servers first. I'd love your honest feedback: what's the one thing that annoys you most about running your own server? And is anything on https://cloudzh.app unclear? submitted by /u/OG_Vezh [link] [comments]
