Original Summary

I’m building CallsIn, missed-call text-back plus an AI receptionist for trades. The hard part wasn’t the AI, it was making the numbers work at small-business prices. A few things I learned: 1. Measure voice cost on real calls, not the pricing page. All-in I’m at about $0.145 a minute (voice platform plus phone carrier). That’s what lets a $99 plan include 250 minutes and still make money. 2. Put hard caps on usage. Every plan has a minute limit and a safety stop at 4x. One runaway loop or one abusive caller can eat a month of margin otherwise. 3. Texting registration costs add up. US carriers make every business register before texting (A2P 10DLC). I only register a client’s own campaign once they pay, so free trials don’t cost me registration fees. 4. The AI has to say it’s an AI. It’s honest, it’s becoming law in some states, and some data says hang-ups actually go down when it does. 5. Text-only plans are the easy yes. Lots of owners don’t want a robot on the phone yet. A $49 plan that just texts missed callers back gets them in the door. Margins land around 90% on text plans and the mid-70s on voice plans at normal use. Happy to answer questions on any of it. submitted by /u/prkafle [link] [comments]
