Original Summary

I spent way too much time recently answering a question many people never ask. Can you run a full multiplayer tabletop server inside Google Apps Script using Google Sheets as the database? Turns out, you can. I built a project called Game Night. The kit includes five classic tabletop formats: a 15x15 crossword tile game with full word list verification, a vertical gravity 4-in-a-row grid, a line-drawing territory game, classic checkers, and a multi-dice combination game, all running in the browser using your own Google account as the backend. I just added a Human vs. Computer mode for Wordwright because I wanted to test the rules engine offline without needing another player connected. Why build it like this? Zero infrastructure cost: No AWS, Firebase, or server hosting required. Apps Script serves the web app, Sheets holds the state, and Drive holds match replays. No build pipeline for users: A non-technical host can just paste the files into Google’s web editor without needing Node, terminal commands, or hosted assets. No AI dependency: It’s just standard JavaScript rules logic, SVG tile generation, and local state management. This took a lot more actual engineering and architectural iteration than a quick "vibe code" weekend project, though there are bound to be a few edge cases to polish. It's completely free and open-source. If you want to look under the hood or try hosting a table, search for tweakyourpc/game-night on GitHub. Curious if anyone else has tried pushing Apps Script or Sheets to do weird things like this, or has thoughts on the bot implementation! submitted by /u/Future_Candidate2732 [link] [comments]
