Original Summary
I’m a backend dev at a logistics company, around 140 people. Our ops team was copying data between Postgres and three spreadsheets every morning, then chasing down which version was right when something didn’t match. I built a small internal tool to cut out the copying. Nothing particularly exciting: a shared view of the records, a few actions, and a way to flag things that needed checking. It was built around one team’s workflow, and I knew the people using it. Our ops lead showed it to another team. Now three more teams want access, and every conversation starts with “we just need the same thing” before turning into a different approval process, different permissions, and a list of fields they want to edit. That’s where I’m getting uncomfortable. Giving more people a login is easy. Working out what happens when two teams change the same record, who can override an approval, and who gets called when something breaks is a different project. I’m not on the platform team. I still have my actual backlog. So far, maintenance has meant someone messaging me and me fixing it when I have a gap. That works with a handful of people. I don’t want it to become the support model for something four departments depend on. I’m trying to decide whether to keep it narrow until someone formally owns it, turn it into a properly supported engineering project, or move it onto an internal-tool platform so there’s less infrastructure for us to maintain. The last option might help with permissions and audit logs, but someone would still have to own the workflows. I don’t want to kill something useful. I also don’t want “you built the first version” to mean “you maintain every department’s version forever.” For people whose small internal tool ended up becoming business-critical: what did you insist on before rolling it out further? Did another team actually take ownership, or did it stay with you? submitted by /u/Ok_Order2464 [link] [comments]
