Original Summary
I’m based in the UK, building a SaaS for electricians. It started as two sided marketplace for electricians to find work, but this turned out to be too much of a challenge, so I’ve added business admin tools and certification. I’m a graphic designer by profession, not a developer or electrician. I’ve built the platform myself using AI alongside my full-time job. It’s been live for around 11 months, and I’m at a point where I’d really appreciate an outside perspective from founders who’ve been through the early stages. Here’s where I’m at: 100+ electricians have registered. 2 users have converted into paying subscribers. One paying customer has completed 14 certificates using the software, so I know at least some people are finding genuine value. Users barely use anything other than certificates. Most signups don’t really activate. They register, explore briefly and disappear. I’ve experimented with Google Ads, focusing on EICR software, spending a few hundred pounds. I’ve started working on SEO more seriously, onboarding emails and reaching out to users directly. The product includes electrical certificates, quotes, invoices, job management and other tools. My biggest problem isn’t getting someone to register. It’s getting them to actually start using the software. I’ve invested time and effort in quick and effortless onboarding, clear next steps and examples of how the end value would look like without needing to actually complete a long cert form. The app has a free tier and a pro tier with a 7-day trial. I had another trial end just before renewal today, and while I expected it, it’s made me question whether I’m focusing on the right things. I keep going back and forth between improving the product, building more features, investing in marketing and trying to speak to more users. I’m bootstrapping everything, so I can’t afford to throw thousands at acquisition to see what sticks. I’d particularly love feedback from anyone who’s built a niche B2B SaaS: With these numbers, would you prioritise acquisition, activation or retention? How? How did you get your first 10 paying customers when you had no existing audience? How did you find out why people signed up but never really used your product? At what point did you realise you had something worth continuing with? I’m not looking for encouragement for the sake of it. If my approach is flawed, I’d genuinely like to understand why. Appreciate any perspectives. Happy to share a link in a private message, I’m not looking to promote. submitted by /u/MatiGzk [link] [comments]
