Original Summary
I'm a solo developer from Singapore, currently building a dating/social app that focuses on connecting people through shared interests, hobbies and activities rather than just endless swiping. The idea is to let people get to know each other naturally through common interests and see if there's chemistry along the way. I've managed to build a working prototype, but now I'm facing a challenge I honestly underestimated. Building the app was the easy part. Getting the first users feels almost impossible. 😂 Unlike most apps, a dating app needs other active users to be useful. Nobody wants to join an empty platform, but without people joining, how do you build that initial community? I'm also stuck deciding what to do next. Should I launch it on the Google Play Store, or focus on the website first? My thinking is that a website has less friction since people can try it immediately without downloading anything. But having an actual app on the Play Store might make it feel more legitimate and encourage people to use it regularly. I'm curious to hear from other developers and founders: Website or Play Store first? Which would you recommend for an early-stage social/dating app, and why? How did you get your first 10–100 users? Did you use Reddit, TikTok, paid ads, communities, or personally approach strangers? How do you solve the cold-start problem? Especially when users need other active users for the product to work. Would you launch with very few users, or wait until you've gathered enough people through a waitlist? What mistakes should I avoid when launching my first app? Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who's gone through something similar, especially those who've built dating apps, social platforms or marketplaces. If you were starting from zero today, what would you do differently to get your first 100 users? Thanks in advance! 🙏 submitted by /u/coupleoftees [link] [comments]
