Original Summary
I’m a software engineer building AI automation services for businesses like receptionist and WhatsApp assistants. I can build the product. My problem is the first few paying clients. What I’ve tried so far: cold email, Upwork, X, LinkedIn / walking into local shops. The advice I keep seeing is “pick a niche” and “offer something free.” I get that, but I want to know what’s working right now, because business owners are getting spammed from every direction. For anyone who has landed real clients: Which channel gave you your first paying client? (Referrals, local outreach, communities, partnerships, marketplaces, something else?) Did you sell to a specific niche, and how did you find them? Does cold outreach still work for you, and what does your first message look like? Is there a community where your actual customers hang out, not other freelancers? What looked promising but wasted your time? Even a “this didn’t work” is useful.
