Original Summary

A month ago I launched Prisoncheck. I’ve had family inside, and the information families need in the first few weeks (when will they ring, when can I visit, is this wait normal) was scattered across Facebook groups, a thin GOV.UK page and sites that felt gimmicky. So I built the thing I wanted: a free site where families anonymously report how long things actually took at each prison. The numbers after one month: 22k unique visitors 863 user-submitted reports covering 106 prisons 295 email contacts, 110 people following a prison for alerts How it makes money: it doesn’t, directly, and I’ve promised it never will charge families. What worked: One sharp question. “How long until they can ring me?” is asked in every prison family group, every day, and nobody publishes the answer. One question made the product, the SEO and the contribution ask all at once. Facebook groups, not ads. A kind admin in a large families group shared it, and that was the launch. Two group posts drove most of the first month’s traffic spikes. Users contribute because it helps the next person. Roughly 1 in 13 visitors adds a report. No points, no badges. People who went through it want to save someone else the same anxiety. Privacy as the product. No names, no prisoner numbers, ever. In this niche, one leaked name would end it. What’s next: fill every prison with fresh data, alerts when a prison’s phones go down, and a quarterly report on how long families wait across the whole system. For anyone who’s built in a sensitive or stigmatised niche: how did you grow without paid ads? submitted by /u/Mysterious_Key6123 [link] [comments]
