Original Summary
Hey r/SideProject 👋 The problem: I kept meaning to read the Bible every morning and kept opening Instagram instead. Reminder apps didn't help. I'd just swipe the notification away. I needed something I couldn't swipe away. What I built: Bible Plan: Verse Alarm & Lock. You pick a reading plan and a time. At that time it blocks the apps you've chosen, and they stay blocked until you reach the last verse of that day's reading. There's no timer to wait out. The reading decides when you're done. It grew from there: - 11 reading plans + 28 topic plans + a custom plan builder - A morning alarm you switch off by filling in the day's verse, word by word - 7 complete Bibles bundled offline (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Tagalog) - A swipeable verse feed, Lock Screen and Home Screen widgets, notes, a journal - UI in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Filipino, on iPhone + iPad Stack: SwiftUI + SwiftData, Apple's Screen Time APIs (FamilyControls / ManagedSettings / DeviceActivity) for the blocking, AlarmKit for the alarm, WidgetKit, StoreKit 2. No backend and no account. Everything runs on the device. Things I learned the hard way: Screen Time entitlements are touchy in App Review. My first build got flagged because my widget target had the Family Controls entitlement when it didn't need it. Only the targets that actually block apps should have it. Free Bible text is messier than you'd think. Some public domain sources I pulled had missing verses and mangled text. I ended up writing a build script that rebuilds every Bible from its source, checks it against the canon, and patches broken verses. Blocking needs to start on its own. In the first version you had to open the app to start a session, and of course I just didn't open it. Now every scheduled reading starts the block automatically at its time. Localization is more than translating strings. Each language needed its own Bible, its own store listing, and its own name on the home screen. Pricing: free download, then a one-time Pro unlock with no subscription. I went with a one-time price because a habit app charging monthly felt wrong to me. It's $1.99 for the rest of October (normally $29.99). 🔗 https://apps.apple.com/us/app/bible-plan-verse-alarm-lock/id6813100068 I'd love feedback, especially on onboarding and the paywall. And if you've built something with the Screen Time APIs, I'm happy to swap notes. 🙏 submitted by /u/Any-Acanthisitta4769 [link] [comments]
