Original Summary
I keep seeing posts about AI startups going from $0 to $10K MRR in 30 days. Well, here's a slightly different story. We just crossed $1K MRR on Stripe. It took us 7 months, a pivot, multiple redesigns, thousands of euros in failed marketing experiments, and a lot of questioning whether we were building the right thing. And technically, we'd already passed $1K MRR before this through customers paying outside Stripe. But there's something satisfying about finally seeing that number on the dashboard. I'm one of the co-founders of Picmim , an AI-powered social media platform that we've been building to help small businesses automate their social media presence. Anyway, here's our story. 1. We started by building AI for social media managers. Our original idea was essentially Buffer on steroids. A social media management platform where humans were still at the center of everything, but AI made them significantly more productive. AI would analyze your performance and recommend the best posting times, write captions with strategic hashtags, suggest new content ideas, and act as a sort of social media consultant. Our target audience was agencies and social media managers. We thought it made perfect sense. These people manage social media professionally, so surely they'd want a tool that made their work easier? Well, not exactly. 2. Our first marketing experiments were a reality check. We spent almost €1,000 on Google and Meta Ads, generating roughly 500,000 impressions. And almost nobody wanted to pay. After talking to potential customers, we started understanding why. First, the AI angle was actually a turnoff for some professionals. Second, most agencies already had established workflows and tools. Switching to an unknown platform wasn't particularly appealing. And third, some saw AI automation as potential competition rather than something that would help them. We'd spent months building a product for people who weren't especially interested in adopting it. Not a great feeling. 3. We decided to pivot. After discussing our situation with a mentor, we decided to embrace AI automation completely. Instead of helping social media managers do their jobs, what if we built something that could handle social media for businesses that couldn't afford a manager in the first place? Think about it. A marketing agency can cost thousands per month. Hiring a social media manager can cost hundreds or more. But what about the small business owner who has €30–50 to spend and barely enough time to run their business? Most agencies aren't interested in serving that customer. The economics simply don't work. But with AI, maybe they could. So we changed our ICP to solo entrepreneurs and small business owners. We spent another two months building automation features and completely redesigning the platform around this new direction. At that point, we were making around €200–300 MRR from a few local companies testing our prod
