Original Summary

I just released GpuThermalGuard 1.0, a free, open-source Windows utility for NVIDIA GPUs. It started with a practical concern: I wanted to monitor GPU temperatures during long workloads and apply a configured lower power limit when thermal protection triggers. As the project grew, I wanted something useful throughout the day: a compact dashboard I could rearrange on the desktop, expand for detailed charts, and bring into games. Version 1.0 includes: Draggable monitoring cards arranged into rows or a vertical column. Compact live trends and an expanded chart view. GPU temperature, power, VRAM, GPU/CPU usage, RAM, network traffic and FPS. Graphics API, resolution and estimated play time. Double-click RAM to reclaim host memory and display the result. Double-click NET for TCP connection diagnostics and a network-path refresh attempt, without promising lower latency. An optional D3D11/D3D12 in-game overlay, including exclusive fullscreen support. The desktop and game views share the same layout. Alt+Tab out to adjust the desktop OSD, then return to the game with the updated overlay. Keeping the footprint small was part of the design: Main executable: approximately 1.8 MB. Overlay DLL: approximately 830 KB. Observed working set: approximately 48 MB, including 10 MB private working set. Observed CPU usage: approximately 0.17%. Those runtime figures come from my workstation and will vary by setup. The goal is a utility you can leave running for continuous background monitoring. It's built with native C++/Win32 and NVIDIA NVML. The overlay uses Splice, my open-source C++ hooking library, to draw the dashboard in the game's present path. Both projects are MIT-licensed: GpuThermalGuard — source, downloads and documentation Splice — hooking library I also wrote about the development: From GPU Thermal Anxiety to an In-Game Dashboard The overlay currently supports native 64-bit D3D11/D3D12 SDR games. Do not use the overlay feature in anti-cheat-protected games. Thermal protection requires configuring a lower Safe Power and cannot guarantee prevention of driver resets or hardware faults. If you give it a try, let me know how it works with your GPU and games. submitted by /u/kwyshell [link] [comments]
