Original Summary
Last week I shared a free Hours of Service calculator here: you enter a truck driver's clocks and a trip, and it lays out where the drive blocks, the 30 minute break and the 10 hour rest land. No sign-up, all the math runs in the browser. Here's what a week of posting it around looked like, since I always want these numbers from other people's posts. Where it went: - r/CDL (student and new drivers): about 960 views in the first 3 hours, 3 upvotes, 0 comments for most of the day. - r/SideProject (this one): 235, 1, 1. - r/IMadeThis (repost): 67 views and 1 upvote in 20 hours, 1 comment. - r/Truckers , the biggest driver sub: auto-removed. My account didn't have enough comment karma. I messaged the mods instead of reposting and I'm still waiting. What actually mattered: One comment beat all the views. The first real reply in r/CDL was four words: "Will it recap?" It didn't. Recap is the day-by-day way to get hours back on the weekly 70 hour limit, instead of sitting out a full 34 hour reset. I shipped it the next day and replied. The same driver called recap "a lost art in most operations", and it's now the feature people mention first. Two separate people asked for offline. Drivers sit at docks with no signal. The math is already client-side, so it's a manifest and a service worker. Not done yet, it's next. Karma gates are real. The audience I built it for is the one place I couldn't post. If you're planning to launch into a niche sub, start commenting there weeks before, not the day of. I'm doing it backwards now: answering hours questions in r/Truckers with no links. I wasted the repost. I used Reddit's "repost to another community" button, so both posts carry the same tracking tag and I can't tell which one sent traffic. Change the UTM before you crosspost. Still free, no sign-up: https://loadlens.krait.studio/hos-calculator/?utm_source=reddit&utm_campaign=hos_calc&utm_content=sideproject_week1 Two questions for people who've launched into niche communities: Did a mod-approved post ever work out for you, or is it better to wait for the karma? For a tool people use once a day at most, is a PWA worth it, or does "add to home screen" never actually happen? submitted by /u/AdKey4749 [link] [comments]
