Original Summary
Hi r/SideProject ! I've been building Tonefold , a GPL-3.0 music composition app written in Rust. It runs standalone or as a CLAP/VST3 plugin. Workspace layout tonefold-core — the engine: music theory, generators, humanization, MIDI and rendering. No plugin dependencies, so it's usable on its own. tonefold-plugin — the app + egui editor, built both as the standalone app and as the optional CLAP/VST3 via nih-plug tonefold-cli — command-line front end to the engine What the editor does Full piano roll in egui: draw / move / resize notes, velocity lane, drum lanes, playhead scrubbing. Built-in General MIDI synth (GeneralUser GS soundfont) so you can hear things without a DAW. Exports MIDI, stereo WAV and per-layer stems. The AI part (opt-in) The composing is done by a Claude Agent SDK sidecar (Node) or an Ollama model, local or remote. It writes note data that goes through tonefold-core , not audio, so everything stays editable. The Rust side works fine without it. Things I learned / would love input on <e.g. egui piano-roll performance with many notes — how you handled it> <e.g. sharing state between nih-plug's audio thread and the egui editor> <e.g. one pain point with CLAP vs VST3 builds, or xtask/bundling on macOS & Windows> Tested in FL Studio so far — would love reports from other hosts (Bitwig, Reaper, Ableton).
