Bit of a weird one, but I thought some of you might like this. I’m a chef living on Sark in the Channel Islands, and a few months ago I started building an Android astronomy app in the evenings after work. I’m not an astronomer and I’m definitely not a professional developer 😂 I just kept having the same problem — I’d hear about an ISS pass, meteor shower, aurora or something interesting in the sky after I’d already missed it. So I started building the app I wanted myself. It’s called NAKED EYE, and the idea is basically: “Is there actually anything worth going outside to see tonight?” It uses your location and viewing conditions and tries to tell you in normal English what’s happening, when to go outside and where to look. A few nights ago it actually warned me the ISS was about to pass over Sark. I went outside when it told me to, looked where it told me to and managed to photograph it going overhead. That was a pretty mad feeling after building the thing around 12-hour kitchen shifts 😂 It’s also started giving me alerts when the conditions look good for a colourful sunset, and one recently went off about 25 minutes before the sky properly lit up. Still loads I want to do with it, but seeing something I built actually getting people outside and looking up is exactly why I started it.
